Design your brand without brand design
The world's favorite tyrant Steve Jobs said this about design:
Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it's this veneer—that the designers are handed this box and told, "Make it look good!" That's not what we think design is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
I actually love this and completely agree. No notes.
Okay, now read that quote again but replace "design" with "branding" :
"Most people make the mistake of thinking BRANDING is what it looks like. People think it's this veneer—that the designers are handed this box and told, "Make it look good!" That's not what we think BRANDING is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. BRANDING is how it works."
The veneer he mentions? That's largely what "brand design" means today (unfortunately).
That last sentence? Now that's how you DESIGN a BRAND.
