Trump authenticity

Too many people talking about "authenticity" like it's some kinda cheat code for success.

What does authentic even mean?

Authentic: of undisputed origin; genuine.

Okay yeah, that makes sense. But have you ever heard someone admiring the power of authentic branding by mentioning a person or brand they dislike?

Of course not. NO ONE does that. You know how I know? Politics.

"Ya know, I really hate Trump but I totally respect and admire his authenticity. More people should be like him. I'm going to post my admiration for his authenticity and tell my followers and marketers in general that they should be emulating his tactics."

No one says that.

When people admire "authentic" branding or "authenticity" it's totally biased. And it's usually some trending or topical brand the world is in love with. Right now it's Liquid Death.

(For the record, I don't think LD is popular because of its "authenticity." I think it's because of the spectacle and the entertainment. They are very good at it. But that's a topic for another day).

So yeah, when you hear people praising authenticity, remember:

They're not praising the value "of undisputed origin; genuine" from a person or brand.

They're really praising a value "of undisputed origin; genuine" that resonates with them.

I hate this topic. So, more soon.
