How to take a logo from placeholder to icon
What up yall, just hyping up this article and the brilliance of Kirby's design again.
There's an amazing quote in the article that I just have to republish and reinforce:
"The character was only a placeholder blob used for demos. Later, it became a beloved figure for HAL Laboratory, the video game developer. Keeping Kirby’s shape simple was a strategic approach. The simplicity of the form would leave such a lasting impression that it would be destined to find a home in the margins of all notebooks."
This is the stuff I say about logos ALL. THE. TIME.
Make it simple. Make it memorable. And let others make it meaningful.
Let's keep going. Here's another relevant quote:
"The overall function of a visual identity is to be recognized by people so they create associations from the moment a product is bought, used, and disposed of."
Yep. Only I would argue that an identity should create associations even before something is bought.
Visual branding needs to be recognizable and create associations from the moment it's seen. From first impression to lasting impression.
